A colliery beside the suburb, and what is known
The Russell Vale colliery holds current approvals for an underground expansion, granted in 2020 and 2021. The approved method is designed to produce very little surface movement, and it is not longwall mining. The mine has not operated since 18 January 2024, after a prohibition order following underground fires. No finding of subsidence has been made here, and whether an address sits in a declared district is a question for Subsidence Advisory NSW.
Coal brought the town here in 1857
Woonona's mine was the second coal mine to open in the Illawarra, started by a local businessman in 1857. He built a jetty to ship the coal to Sydney, and it was coal rather than farming that brought people. The families came from Wales, Cornwall and Scotland, and the mine worked west of Gray Street until 1921. Their houses are the oldest stock we work on here, with old framing and old cornice in them.
The ordinary suburb on this coast
After a run of suburbs that are unusual in one direction or another, Woonona is the mid market one. Its income, its household size and its bedroom count all sit close to the state figures. That means a broad mix of work rather than one specialty, across both houses and units. We quote it that way rather than assuming the budget of the suburbs north of here.

How much notice do you need for a job in a walk up block?
About a week is comfortable, and the reason is the access rather than the plastering. We need to know who lets us in and where the sheets can be stacked. We also need to know whether the stairwell or the lobby has to be protected. If your building has rules about work hours we would rather have them at the quote than learn them on the first morning. None of it is difficult when it is sorted out in advance. It just goes badly when it is all left until the day.
